How to Play Boggle

A quick guide to rules, scoring, and a few useful tips.

The basic idea

You get a grid of random letters and a countdown timer. Your goal is to find as many valid English words as you can before time runs out. Words are formed by connecting letters that are next to each other — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Rules

• Words must be at least 3 letters long.
• Each letter tile can only be used once per word.
• Letters must be adjacent (touching) in the grid — including diagonals.
• Words are checked against a dictionary. Proper nouns, abbreviations, and slang usually don't count.

Scoring

In the online version, each letter has a point value (similar to Scrabble), and longer words get a multiplier:

So a 6-letter word like MARKED would score: M(3) + A(1) + R(1) + K(5) + E(1) + D(2) = 13, then ×3 = 39 points.

Classic Boggle scoring

In the original board game, scoring is simpler — based only on word length: 3–4 letters = 1 point, 5 letters = 2, 6 = 3, 7 = 5, 8+ = 11.

Tips

• Look for common endings like -ING, -ED, -ER, -LY. If you spot one, work backwards to find the root word.
• Don't forget diagonals. Some of the best words use diagonal connections that are easy to miss.
• Longer words are worth way more. A single 7-letter word can outscore five 3-letter words.
• Try plurals. If you found STONE, check if STONES works too.
• Keep scanning. Don't stare at one part of the grid for too long. Move your eyes around the whole board.

The best way to get better is just to keep playing. You'll start recognizing letter patterns faster over time.
